Finally, we have arrived at the week of the Friendship Football Tournament, and now hopefully all the hard work of so many people will produce a weekend which is both highly enjoyable for everyone and also a good source of revenue for the football club.
There is still plenty of hard work to come this week and over the weekend for our army of volunteers, but this is a good time to thank you all for the huge efforts which you have made. I was at the ground on both days over the weekend, and everything has come together well. A lot of the jobs which have needed doing for a long time have been fixed this Summer, in addition to the work required to get the ground up to the standard required by the FA. The work behind the scenes which many of you have done to prepare for the tournament (and also rebuild the club) is less visible, but no less important and just as hard work.
The new stand at the City End of the ground is something we can all be proud of. Huge thanks to Gary Englefield and the Bus Shelter Band, not only for all the many hours spent working at the ground, but also for coming up with the idea and driving the project to completion. The stand isn’t quite finished yet, but will should be ready for the weekend. Thanks for a great job.
I’d also like to thank everyone who has helped at the ground and behind the scenes in so many ways this Summer, some of your work is unsung but the committee are aware of all the effort that has been put in by so many people. I have been totally amazed by the number of people who have come forward to help – the total number of unpaid hours volunteered to the club has been staggering.
Away from the ground, the new squad commenced pre-season training on 30th June, and I have had positive reports from everyone, players and management alike. Andy continues to add to the squad, and the commitment and enthusiasm already shown by all is surely a good sign for the season ahead. The spirit at this club over the last two months – on and off the pitch – has been incredible. Let’s all stick together through pre-season and as the league campaign progresses. There will inevitably be setbacks, but if we all support each other – players, management, supporters and committee – I am confident that we can achieve our objectives.
In all the excitement of this weekend and the coming weeks, spare a thought for Sam Sparkes, our kit man, who is currently struggling with a spinal injury. Sam is due in hospital for an operation in the next couple of weeks – we wish you all the very best, Sam, and look forward to seeing you back at the City Ground soon.
My family and I are now away for two weeks on holiday – I think they deserve it. Enjoy the tournament and pre-season, but most of all THANK YOU to you all for everything that you’ve done.
