Friday 26th December
Winchester City 9 Andover 3

A fine Boxing Day victory by Winchester City over local rivals was overshadowed by an horrific injury received by Andover’s 36-year-old midfielder Allan Kennedy.

City started brightly and opened the scoring after only four minutes. Ian Mancey headed home a cross from Matthew Bicknell after only four minutes. Andover’s retaliation saw Paul Hughes have a shot cleared off the line by Shaun Dyke on a quarter of an hour whilst City’s next best attempt was from Lloyd Webber who shot narrowly wide of the target.

With twenty-four minutes on the clock a challenge between Mancey and Kennedy saw the Andover player writhe in agony following the purely accidental collision. With the player in obvious agony an ambulance was called and play was held up for thirty-five minutes as the ambulance arrived to make the player comfortable and carry him from the pitch.

The game restarted and within two minutes City had doubled their lead former Andover striker Andrew Forbes racing on to a through ball and shot home. With thirty-two minutes actually played Mancey added his second goal of the afternoon turning home from close range and a minute later Forbes was on hand to slot home his second goal of the afternoon.

It took City until seven minutes into the second half to add their fifth goal. The Andover defence did not clear a corner and Forbes shot home for his hat trick. Three minutes later and a Liam Green corner was headed home by Gary Green and City were cruising at six goals ahead.

Andover skipper Glen Damen brought down Adam Rogers after sixty three minutes and Forbes duly rammed home the penalty before Andover netted their first goal eight minutes later a right wing Mario Nurse corner deceived Oliver Rastall and the ball was in the net.

Phil Andrews was appealing for a penalty on seventy-six minutes but referee Mr David Ford waved away the appeal and City quickly counter attacked. Rogers rode a couple of challenges on the right wing to which the officials played a good advantage, Rogers laid the ball into the area where Forbes shot home his forty seventh goal so far this season.

A poor clearance by Rastall four minutes later allowed Steve McNulty to flight the ball from some forty yards back into the net. With seven minutes remaining Andover further reduced the arrears Andrews creating an opening on the left before swinging over a cross which hit the post only for Andover substitute Dean Cole to turn the ball into an empty net.

In stoppage time Kevin Brewster netted the ninth goal from City with a shot from outside the area.
