Winchester City 2 Hamworthy United 0

At the third attempt to play the tie, City disposed of Dorset Combination League side Hamworthy United to progress into the next round of the F A Challenge Vase.

Despite not having the services of Ian Mancey, Andy Forbes, Stewart Lang, Gary Green, Danny Smith City were always too strong for their opponents although were struggling to find the back of the net. Liam Gearing had the best chances in the opening half but was thwarted by the impressive Hamworthy goalkeeper Tom Hawkins. Lloyd Webber also produced two excellent efforts from long distance that both times were inches too high.

After an excellent effort by the City ground staff to get the match played, the surface was greasy but well prepared. It was not though until five minutes into the second half did the hard work look as though it was to be the right result for City. Liam Gearing was brought down in the area by Hamworthy defender Scott Bedward and it was Michael Dean who took the responsibility to fire home the penalty for his twelfth goal of the season.

Hamworthy already unhappy with the penalty award were further deflated nine minutes after the penalty. Shaun Dykes cross into the near post was diverted past his own goalkeeper Hawkins by the diving head of Anthony Tilley and City’s passage into the Third Round of the vase looked more comfortable.

Hamworthy kept trying to break the City rearguard but City proved too strong an outfit for their visitors and now travel to Sussex County League side Whitehawk on December 13th for their Third Round match.
