Saturday 10th January
Winchester City 5 Whitchurch United 0

A good day for City whilst not only securing a fine win themselves, the two other main championship contenders Wimborne Town and Gosport Borough both dropped points.

With manager Neil Hards away watching next weeks Vase opponents Mossley, City were under the guidance of Gary Green, Mark Blake and Steve Moss. There was a Wessex League debut for goalkeeper Simon Arthur.

City held the upper hand with the position but the visitors defended well ensuring that somebody would block the ball, the defence and midfield working hard in covering all areas.

City almost went ahead on eighteen minutes; Lloyd Webber thundering a shot from twenty yards against the bar quickly followed by a Shaun Dyke cross-cum-shot that narrowly missed the target. Midway through the opening half and with Whitchurch appealing for offside, Ian Mancey broke through following a good City move but his shot was saved by keeper Paul Marchant.

Andy Forbes had the ball in the back of the net on twenty four minutes but the effort was ruled offside whilst Whitchurchs’ best effort was a long range shot from former City defender Cliff Power that was fielded by Arthur.

Forbes had a header from a Bicknell free kick saved by Marchant before City went ahead on twenty-nine minutes. Shaun Dyke produced a cross from the right which was headed downwards by Forbes and the unfortunate Power could only turn the ball into his own net from inside the six yard area.

Mancey had a long range shot just over the bar before City increased their lead on the stroke of half time. Again Dyke provided another right wing cross which saw Danny Smith nip in front of his defender to turn home a glancing header.

Within two minutes of the restart Forbes had his name on the scoresheet, running on to a through ball to loft the ball over the advancing Marchant. With fifty-three minutes played, Matthew Bicknell whipped in a left-footed free kick from the edge of the box, which eluded everyone, and City were four goals ahead.

Substitute David Goss headed another Bicknell free kick just wide of the target and Marchant produced a fine stop to deny Bicknell added another goal.

City did not add their fifth until the last minute of the game, again some fine City movement ended with Forbes free on the left hand side of the box to drill the ball low into the net.
