Saturday 24th January
Winchester City 5 Fareham Town 1

In front of City’s biggest gate so far this season, 271, both sides produced some excellent football for a thoroughly entertaining encounter. With City returning to their more recognisable line up following their midweek encounter at Brockenhurst, with the exception of Matthew Bicknell still recovering from the nasty knock at Mossley last weekend.

In fact City went ahead on eighty-five seconds. Andrew Forbes the provider, his right wing cross falling for his strike partner Ian Mancey to fire home. Visibly shaken, Fareham without their stalwart defender Beejay Green, fell a further goal behind on seven minutes, Liam Green playing the ball into Forbes who’s inch perfect pass saw Mancey slot the ball past the advancing Fareham keeper, City’s Lloyd Webbers brother, Lee. This was City’s one hundreth league goal of the campaign in their twenty third match.

Fareham themselves though looked dangerous on the attack. They pulled a goal back on twenty minutes, a right wing cross from Lloyd Mitchell was headed home by Floyd Hamodou. But City’s fluent football of the first half was never going to let their advantage slip.

Forbes headed just over from a Shaun Dyke cross, then a last gasp tackle from Fareham defender Darren Watts denied Danny Smith an almost certain goal and Lloyd Webber had a shot saved by his brother.

A third goal had to come. With twenty eight minutes played a long probing ball from the City defence by Danny Smith saw Forbes cause confusion with Fareham keeper Webber and centre back Watts on the edge of the Fareham penalty area. Forbes finally managed to gain control of the ball and struck home from the edge of the box.

Gary Green sent a shot just over the bar before a fourth was added on thirty-nine minutes. Dykes right wind corner was met by the running Toby Redwood to send a bullet header in to the net for his first goal for City.

City almost added further goals before the interval. Danny Smith following a Dyke cross was just denied then Forbes shot over with only Webber to beat.

The second half did not match the quality of the opening forty-five minutes but both sides maintained their football pedigree. Fareham saw a header rebound away off the bar but the only time a goal arrived in the second period was for City with only ten minutes remaining. Another Dyke corner into the box, Webber in the Fareham goal failed to hold the ball and Mancey tucked home his third goal of the afternoon his eighteenth strike of the season.

City supporters looked on in anguish as David Goss limped from the action shortly into the second period with a foot injury and on the hour Forbes limped from the action after pulling up when chasing after the ball.
