Winchester City 3 Bemerton Heath Harlequins 1

Winchester returned to their winning ways easing to a victory over Salisbury side Bemerton Heath harlequins in this Sydenhams Wessex League fixture.

It took City thirty seven minutes to open the scoring leading to fears amongst the City fans that perhaps goals might have been hard to come by as they had been in the midweek defeat at B A T Sports.

Gary Green had an early shot cleared away, the Green was the provider only for Matthew Bicknell to look on despairingly as Bemerton goalkeeper James Domm claw the ball away to safety. Danny Smith had an angled drive also well saved by Domm as the Bemerton keeper was starting to become the star of the show.

Green shot wide of the target after breaking through as City looked for an opening and then had warning signs former City favourite Stuart Findlay took too long to produce a goalbound attempt after gaining the ball on the edge of the City box. Shaun Dyke cut in from the City right flank and saw his shot cleared off the line by the former City defender Jamie Boswell before City scored their all important opening goal.

Dykes cross was shot goalwards by Smith beyond Domm but the ball struck the foot of the post and Andrew Forbes reacted quickest to fire City ahead.

Smith moments later almost added to the score breaking through the Bemerton rearguard but shot wide but City did add their second on thirty-nine minutes. Dyke again providing good work on the right allowed the ball to fall for Gary Green to fire home Citys second goal.

City were always in command from then on, if Bemerton could have pulled a goal back then the game could have swung differently but in reality City keeper Simon Arthur did not have a serious shot to save all afternoon. Bicknell fired just wide when well placed, Forbes saw a one on one with Domm blocked by the keepers legs.

In the second period Forbes struck shots against the cross bar twice in sixty seconds, then a low shot by Ian Mancey was saved by Domm. The third goal was scored by Mancey. Again Dyke was involved in the build up play, skating past the full back for the umpteenth time in the afternoon, his cross was headed back across goal by Forbes and Mancey had the simple task of touching the ball over the line.

Coty could have added more, the closes being in the final minute when a long range curling effort from Liam green went just wide of the target.
