Bournemouth Poppies 1 Winchester City 3
Although lacking the passion that the league match at Andover had less than forty-eight hours earlier, City again had to put behind a poor performance in the first half and recover from a goal deficit.
With Manager Neil Hards and Director of Football David Malone away watching Bideford, Bideford had their own spy at Victoria Park, casting an eye over City. With Ian Mancey and Lloyd Webber starting on the bench it was a start for Steve Tate and Kevin Brewster to stake a claim for a first team shirt against Bideford in the Vase semi finals. It was though a poor opening City half for all the side.
Only eight minutes had been played when Simon Arthur short goal kick to Toby Redwood saw the defender hustled off the ball and Lewis Till drove the ball home to give Poppies an early lead.
Tate headed over when well placed from a Matthew Bicknell cross whilst Brewster with a shot on the return was saved by home goalkeeper Kyle Roberjot, but Poppies were holding their own and chasing for every ball. Warren Doyle was proving a constants menace in the Poppies strikeforce whilst City were increasing their pressure on the Poppies goal as the home side were forced further back as the game progressed.
Mancey and Webber were thrust into the action at the interval and eleven minutes into the second period Mancey headed over from a Redwood cross. With fifty-eight minutes played City were on level terms. Andrew Forbes played a pass into the feet of Bicknell who shot low from the edge of the area beating Roberjot and going into the net via the inside of the post.
On the hour and City were ahead. Liam Greens pass into the area saw Webber have the ball at an acute angle, but his ball back across the face of the goal was calmly turned home by Mancey.
Arthur produced a fine stop to deny Alex Jones as City were on the ascendancy but Poppies forced breakaways. Webber and Mancey both saw efforts blocked by the Poppies keeper Roberjot and then Mancey saw another header tipped over by the keeper. David Goss had a header from a corner met with the same result also.
Gary Green sent a ferocious header over the bar from his namesakes Liam corner before City made the game safe with ten minutes remaining. Another Liam Green corner saw Mancey head towards goal and despite attempts from two Poppies defenders the ball was over the line and Mancey claimed his twenty fifth goal of the season.
City : Arthur, Dyke, Bicknell, Redwood, Goss, Blake, Brewster (Webber 45), G Green (Lang 82), Tate (Mancey 45), Forbes, L Green
