Cowes Sports 1 Winchester City 4
With their second game in forty-eight hours, City took the field at Cowes Sports on a wet slippery surface with the unfamiliar sight of goalkeeper Ollie Rastall wearing an outfield substitutes shirt. With Danny Smith and Toby Redwood ruled out through injury and Stewart Lang and Gary Green with suspension City were struggling for numbers player wise.
City started well with Shaun Dyke marauding on the left flank for the opening part of the match, his second minutes run and cross brought Cowes goalkeeper Gary Streeter an early touch of the ball. On four minutes Liam Greens free kick found the head of Kieron Hall but his effort went just wide of the target.
City went ahead after twenty minutes. Dykes whipped in free kick to the near post was turned into his own net by Cowes Sports central defender Ollie Fleming under the close attention of Kevin Brewster. This was City’s 200th goal of the season. Five minutes later another opening created by Dyke saw a shot from Liam Green cleared away off the line.
Cowes Sports first effort on target arrived four minutes before the interval, Phil McDonald having his effort saved by Simon Arthur. City almost added a second of their own before the interval, David Goss heading a Green corner just wide then a Brewster free kick from just outside the box took a deflection that saw Streeter scurry across his goal to claim the ball safely.
Cowes Sports created some early second half openings, Macdonald saw a shot come back off the post but a second City goal on fifty-eight minutes settled City again. Liam Greens cross was not cleared by a Cowes defender and Andrew Forbes steadied himself before turning home his seventy first goal of the campaign.
Forbes was immediately replaced by Rastall who took over a striker’s role and continued to torment the Cowes defence for the rest of the evening. Cowes were restricted to long range efforts. Darren Powell struck one such effort just over the bar on sixty-five minutes.
At the other end of the park, Ian Mancey saw a header from a Green corner saved by Streeter, then from another Green corner Rastall headed just wide, both in the space of a minute. City were not though to be outdone. A minute later, 72nd, City added a third. Again Green crossing the ball into the box, Mancey's saw his header pushed out by Streeter only for Rastall to loop a header back over the keeper into the net.
Fine interplay by Mancey, Rastall and Brewster set up Steve Tate to fir home City’s fourth goal of the evening. Cowes saw their substitute David Greening have a shot saved by Arthur, then Ross Gregory had a low effort pushed away by Arthur. Cowes did though manage a consolation goal in the final minute when the ball played into the box saw Ollie Buckett looking suspiciously offside tap the ball into an empty net.
City : Arthur, Dyke, Rogers (Bicknell 38) (Mancey 56), Hall, Goss, Blake, Webber, Brewster, Tate, Forbes (Rastall 59), L Green
