Wimborne Town 1 Winchester City 4
Starting with only six of the players that had played at Wroxham in the F A Vase three days earlier, City travelled to current Sydenhams League leaders Wimborne Town for this League Cup Quarter Final fixture.
Following a brief opening Wimborne flurry, City took control of the game for nearly the whole ninety minutes. Steve Waite had a shot from close range well saved by home goalkeeper Stewart Kearn on only eight minutes and on the quarter of an hour again Kearn denied Waite.
Shaun Dykes left wing cross in the nineteenth minute saw opposite wing back Waite again arrive in the box only to head just over the bar. On the half-hour with Waite the provider, Adam Rogers had a header saved by Kearns.
City took the lead after thirty-four minutes. Following a Kevin Brewster corner, Kieron Hall bundled the ball over the line for his first goal of the season. Three minutes later Lloyd Webber having already had a couple of long distance efforts off target, did hit the back of the net with another fine drive from twenty five yards but the effort was ruled our by referee Wendy Toms for offside against a City striker.
Webber was not to be denied though, from an identical position three minutes later, Webber unleashed an unstoppable volley past the stranded Kearn and City were two goals ahead.
Nine minutes into the second period and Hall was on the scoresheet again, turning home a Brewster cross at the far post. On the hour Wimborne pulled a goal back when their leading scorer Gareth Barnes had a shot that took a wicked deflection to beat Oliver Rastall.
City were soon back on the attack and within a minute Hall was denied his hat trick when Kearn held the defenders header following another Brewster corner. Brewster himself sent in a curling shot that saw Kearn produce another fine stop whilst Wimborne retaliated with a Darren Powell free kick going just wide of the target.
With thirteen minutes remaining and Wimborne all out attacking in attempt to get back into the game, City sprung from defence. A thirty-yard pass from Brewster fell into the path of substitute Gary Green who took the ball on before sliding the ball under the advancing Kearns and City had their fourth goal of the evening.
Kearn on his way to earning the Wimborne man of the match award produced another fine stop to deny Brewster whilst Powell for Wimborne had another attempt cleared off the line by Waite but City progressed into the semi final and two legged affair with Brockenhurst. They travel to Brockenhurst in the first leg on Tuesday 2nd March with the return at the Denplan City Ground on Tuesday 23rd March.
