Downton 1 Winchester City 3
City returned to the bread and butter Sydenhams Wessex League following their trip to Bideford three days earlier. A revamped side with only two players in the starting eleven that started the match at Bideford, City held the upper hand all the match.
With Downton ever ready to get eleven men behind the ball, City created chance after chance but were struggling to make any count. The closest City had come to scoring was in the nineteenth minute when Steve Tate had a shot saved from a right wing Adam Rogers cross. The inevitable had to happen. With basically Downtons first attack on thirty four minutes, Brian White struck a speculative shot from fully thirty five yards that saw Oliver Rastall get a hand to the ball but could not prevent the ball entering the net and giving Downton the lead.
This did not alter the flow of the match though. City still pressed Downton deep into the own half. With five minutes to go until the interval Kevin Brewster saw a shot pushed over the bar by home goalkeeper Luke Haviland then shortly afterwards Brewster hit another shot from just outside the box, the effort just over the bar.
With half time approaching, Gary Green playing in an unfamiliar role of sweeper found himself at the other end of the pitch in the Downton penalty area, where his persistence allowed him to send the ball into the six yard box where Steve Tate headed home the equaliser.
Three minutes into the second period Rogers fine run and low cross saw Brewster tap the ball home to give City the lead. Captain for the night Lloyd Webber scored the third goal on sixty-six minutes breaking into the area before firing a shot past Haviland with the help of a deflection.
In stoppage time City almost added three goals. In the space of a minute substitutes Ian Mancey saw a shot cleared off he line, and Toby Redwood had a shot tipped over by Haviland and also saw a header form the resultant corner crash against the cross bar and then to safety.
City : Rastall, Rogers, L Green, J Dixon, Goss, Lang, Hall, Webber (Redwood 74), G Green (Blake 45), Tate, Fitzpatrick (Mancey 74), Brewster
