Brockenhurst 1 Winchester City 3
You would have excused City for being below par. Following their weekend exploits to Manchester and Mossley in the F A Vase you may have expected them to be so. But such is the strength of the City squad at the moment that only three players that appeared on Saturday made the starting line up as City reached the semi final of the Russell Cotes Cup for the second successive season.
There may have been more changes but Kieron Hall, Michael Dean and Stuart Hussey all injured, would have appeared in the side. It took City time to settle though as Brockenhurst started working hard against the City. Mark Blake’s wayward clearance gave Brockenhurst a chance in the ninth minute but Steve Jenkins shot nipped away off the foot of the post.
City grew stronger as the half progressed. Gary Green being a colossus in the middle of the park, almost netted on eighteen minutes, his toe poked effort following a corner being saved by Ian Brunnschweiler. With thirty-two minutes played City did go ahead. Captain Danny Smith receiving a throw in from Steve Waite, cut inside a group of defenders before sending a low left foot shot through a crowd of players into the corner of the net.
A bustling run from Danny Marks minutes later ended with his shot going wide of the target as Brockenhurst looked for a quick comeback, but five minutes before the interval City scored a second goal. Smith this time the instigator lofting a ball into the box where Steve Waite arrived at the far post outjumping everyone to head home.
The result from then on was settled. City held the upper hand stifling any hard work that Brockenhurst produced. City waited until the sixty sixth minute before adding to the score, a superb strike from Kevin Brewster from twenty-five yards gave Brunnschweiler no chance as City coasted to victory.
Brockenhurst made their three substitutions as they sought for something from the game, City only use coach Steve Moss as the 35 year old made his playing debut for the club, almost scoring from his first touch. Brockenhurst had the final say with a consolation goal in the last minute. Two of their substitutes involved, Dominic Taylor playing the ball in for Danny Neville to shoot and beat Oliver Rastall at the near post.
City though well worth their place in the semi final which has yet to be drawn, the match to be played week commencing 15th March.
City : Rastall, Waite, Batchelor, Lang, Goss, Blake, Smith, G Green (Moss 86), Rogers, Tate, Brewster Unused subs Webber, Arthur, L Green, Hall
