Winchester City 4 Brockenhurst 2
(Winchester City win 5-3 on aggregate)
Winchester City reached the final of the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup with this victory over Brockenhurst. Following a one all draw from the first leg, City stormed into a fifth minute lead in this second leg match. Shaun Dyke set up Lloyd Webber who shot low in at the near post past Brockenhurst goalkeeper Iain Brunnschweiler.
Three minutes later Liam Green tucked away another Dyke cross from the right but referee David Ford signalled for an earlier offside decision. Brockenhurst fought back and equalised on thirteen minutes. On a wet evening Matt Morris’ right wing corner flew over the top of Simon Arthur and into the net despite a desperate lunge by a City defender and the scores were level, both for the tie and on aggregate.
With away goals counting double there was all to play for. Twenty-two minutes played and Steve Tate shot home his third goal in City colours after Adam Rogers had miscued his attempt and City were back in front. The lead only last three minutes when Mark Issacsson netted for the visitors again levelling the aggregate scores but giving Brockenhurst the advantage with the away goals rule.
Eleven minutes before the interval City nosed in front again. Rogers placing a neat shot just wide of Brunnschweiler and into the net.
City were really in control from then on, Brockenhurst never really threatened to pull level again. On seventy minutes Kevin Brewster skipped into the box and was tripped by former City midfielder Nicky Kemp and Shaun Dyke shot home the penalty despite a heavy hand on the shot by Brunnschweiler but the force of the shot was too much.
A brief late flurry by the visitors saw Simon Arthur produce a fine stop from Danny Marks, but City were in a strong enough position to reach the final of the competition.
The Final in on Monday May 3rd at Lymington & New Milton Fawcett Fields ground, against Bemerton Heath Harlequins and former City old boys Stuart Findlay, Jason Ahmet, Andy Chainey, Paul Copping and Jamie Boswell.
City : Arthur, Dyke, Bicknell (Blake 18), Smith (J Dixon 64), Goss, Hall, Webber, Brewster, Tate, Rogers, L Green Unused sub Forbes
