B A T Sports 2 Winchester City 1

Winchester City’s run of fourteen consecutive victories, and a total of sixteen matches unbeaten came to an abrupt end at the B A T Sports ground on Tuesday evening. Having themselves beaten Dr Martens League Eastleigh the previous week, B A T Sports fought for the whole ninety minutes and grabbed a winner as the match entered stoppage time, not allowing City into their fluent footballing moves.

Still on the high from their weekend Vase victory City were without Gary Green and top scorer Andy Forbes and David Goss still injured, but in other weeks additional players have been rested and victory has befell City. It could have been a different story though had City taken their chances.

In the fifth minute a Matthew Bicknell cross was met by Ian Mancey but the strikers effort hit the post. Two minutes later and a Shaun Dyke run and cross saw Kevin Brewster blast over from close range. This was a warning of the events to come.

With twenty minutes played and B A T Sports still without an attack to their name, a free kick for B A T was played into the City box. The assistant referee adjudged that Toby Redwood pulled the shirt of B A T striker David Roberts and referee Mr P Hutchings awarded a penalty after consulting his assistant. Roberts shot home the penalty to put B A T ahead.

City responded with Danny Smith having a long-range effort saved by home goalkeeper Gareth Barfoot, then Dyke and Lloyd Webber combined to set up Brewster, but Brewster fired over the bar. Another long range effort from Smith was again saved by Barfoot, whilst B A T created a chance when following a corner Simon Arthur had to deal with a header from defender Paul Vinton.

Roberts was left unmarked with nine minute to go until the interval but his effort was saved by Arthur and as the interval approached a Smith free kick was headed on by Mark Blake for Toby redwood to shoot on the urn but he was denied by Barfoot.

Within five minutes of the restart City were level. Dykes quick free kick allowed Smith to rifle an thunderbolt shot that cannoned into the net off the underside of the bar and City were level. Adam Rogers had a header from a Smith free kick well saved by Barfoot minutes later as City threatened to take control of the game.

Dyke’s run and shot was parried by Barfoot, whilst Brewster picked up a ball midway into the B A T half ran at the defence but his shot was again saved by Barfoot. B A T Sports though regained their composure and were starting to win the midfield battle again.

With the game looking as though it would have ended in a draw, Richard Gregory with an amazing turn of pace from inside his own half, sped past a standing defender. Gregory ran on to drill a low shot past Arthur and settle the issue for B A T Sports, although City did have a further attempt to take a share of the spoils Ian Mancey having an effort scrambled away as the game ended.
