Tuesday 27th March
Gosport Borough 0 Winchester City 2

City pulled off a tremendous victory over Gosport Borough to return to the top of the Sydenhams Wessex League for the first time since late November, on goal difference from Wimborne Town, although they do have three games in hand on the second place club. The victory also leaves City with a twelve points advantage over Gosport who lie in third place and City also have two games in hand on the Borough as well.

Having produced arguably their best display of the season in the home fixture against Gosport, it was the home side who started strongly. Graham Lindsay proved an early threat in the Gosport attack, Simon Arthur producing a fine stop in the third minute. Six minutes later and Arthur was in action again to deny Danny Sturman.

City had an opportunity to score on eleven minutes, Mark Blakes header from a Liam Green corner being blocked by the body of giant Gosport goalkeeper Mark Brown. Ian Mancey’s diving header from another Liam Green cross was saved by Brown three minutes later.

On a hard uneven surface playing controlled football was not easy for either side. A rising drive from Lloyd Webber on the half-hour went just over the top of the Gosport goal. Sturman had another effort well saved by Arthur but as the half came to a close it was City in the ascendancy. On the stroke of half time another Green corner saw David Goss power a header well wide of the target from inside the area.

The second half continued in the same manner. City had the better opportunities. Webber produced a strong run into the heart of the Gosport defence on the hour then laid the ball off for Kevin Brewster who powered a shot just over the bar. With sixty-seven minutes played Shaun Dyke produced an excellent cross from his right wing position and Webber was in the six-yard area to head home and put City ahead with a rare headed goal from the exquisite midfielder.

With the game drawing to a close and City looking good for the victory Gosport produced a couple of chances. Arthur was not to be beaten though and in the final minute, both Green and Dyke combined on the right flank with a short corner before whipping the ball onto the near post where substitute Adam Rogers diverted the ball into the net and assure City of a victory.
