Winchester City suffered their second defeat during their pre season campaign, but against opposition from two rungs higher in the pyramid system, manager Neil Hards must be satisfied with a performance that for long times saw his side keep the ball and create several opportunities.
The only goal of the game arrived on eleven minutes, following a right wing corner an innocuous looking infringement between Kieron Hall and Paul Sales saw referee Mr D McDermid award the home side a penalty. Ryan Ashford sent Simon Arthur the wrong way from the penalty kick.
Without the likes of Andrew Forbes, Ian Mancey, Lloyd Webber, Jamie Musselwhite, Toby Redwood in their ranks for the afternoon, Eastleigh lacked the presence of former City skipper Danny Smith, but it was City that looked more likely to equalise than Eastleigh extend their advantage.
A Jamie Laidlaw header on seventeen minutes saw the Eastleigh defence beaten but the ball hit the crossbar and bounced to safety. Midway though the half a fine flowing City move saw Mark Smith strike a shot from twenty five yards that crashed against the post with Colin Matthews caught flat footed.
Matthew’s saved at the feet of Smith later in the game and a series of City chances went astray. Eastleigh had some efforts but Arthur dealt comfortably with any threat imposed.
Only six minutes of the match remained when Martin Beck took the ball into the City area, where Shaun Dyke was adjudged to have sent the tricky winger flying. Another penalty. Robbie Matthews struck the first shot low past Arthur, but referee McDermid ordered a retake for infringing onto the area. This time Arthur stood his ground and blocked the shot.
City therefore lost by a solitary goal on a blazing hot afternoon that saw the City ask several more questions against their higher riding opponents.
