Sydenhams Wessex League
Lymington & New Milton 1 Winchester City 0
Winchester City fell to their first defeat of the Sydenhams Wessex League season whilst Lymington & New Milton claimed their first victory, this being City’s second defeat in five league games both at the hands of Ian Robinson’s men.
A below par performance from City saw Lymington claim victory with a twenty fifth minute strike from Ben Thomson. An attacking match that saw both sides create numerous chances amazed most people with only one goal to show.
From as early as the second minute former City midfielder Mark Clothier lofted a shot onto the top of the net, whilst City’s best early chance was a Jamie Laidlaw header that was saved by A F C Bournemouth goalkeeper Kevin Scriven on loan o the Linnets.
Darren Curtis struck a free kick from distance with twelve minutes played that Simon Arthur did well to keep out then five minutes later Patrick James turned a cross from Jimmy Sheppard into the side netting. On twenty five minutes Clothier played the ball out wide from the centre of the pitch to Thomson who strode on before sending a low fierce drive beyond Arthur that struck the inside of the post before rolling into the net.
City came alive a Shaun Dyke cross was just missed by Ian Mancey but then Arthur had to save well from Thomson and another long range effort, the ball being only pushed away and Arthur had to react to deny both Michael Jackson and Sam Carter.
Liam Green produced a cross that Mancey flashed across the face of goal and a Mark Smith shot went through a crowd of players before being saved by Scriven.
Changes just into the second half saw a change of formation for City but still they met with a solid Lymington rearguard. Adam Rogers scooped a shot over the bar when well placed, and a Matthew Bicknell free kick saw Toby Redwood blaze over the bar when well placed.
Lymington substitute Darren Crook headed wide from a Thomson cross whilst his City counterpart Stuart Cannie thundered a shot off target.
Cannie did have the ball in the back of the net with eight minutes to play but the effort was disallowed for hand all by the City striker.
