Winchester City 3 Hamble ASSC 1

It was a valuable three points that City gained with an under par performance against a hard working neat footballing Hamble side. The watching scouts from revised F A Vase opponents Newmarket Town would have learnt little from the Friday night trip down from Suffolk. The significance of Jamie Musselwhite hobbling away from the action after only eleven minutes with an ankle injury remains to be seen how that could affect next weeks Vase match.

Musselwhite had taken his knock minutes before the eleventh when in collision with a defender and goalkeeper. Despite treatment Musselwhite hobbled around a couple of minutes, also watched Lloyd Webber open the scoring with a drive that took a deflection past Hamble goalkeeper Nick O’Donnell after being set up by Shaun Dyke, which signalled the end of the action for the evening for Musselwhite.

Hamble had considerably more of the play after the goal. Robbie Cox prompting from the centre of the park was causing City several problems, one long-range effort being pushed away by David Hook. Ian Mancey saw a tame effort claimed by O’Donnell before Cox again caused concern with another long range effort midway through the half that was saved by Hook.

On the half hour City were relieved when a rising drive from the left by Mark McClements thundered against the City crossbar with Hook beaten. City maintained their slender one goal advantage going into the interval.

Four minutes into the second period and City added a second goal. A cross from Peter Smith was handled by a Hamble defender in the six yard box, Ian Mancey tapped the ball home for the second goal and after consultation with his assistant, the referee Mr B Harman allowed the goal to stand rather than award a penalty kick.

On the hour Mancey headed a Dyke cross wide and two minutes later from a Green corner Mat Jones blazed high over the bar. On sixty nine minutes Webber and Dyke exchanged passes on the right, Webber strode into the area and squared the ball across goal for Ben Kneller to claim City’s third goal of the evening.

With the game seemingly won City manager Steve Tate made a couple of substitutions, which disjointed the City side slightly. Dyke sent a free kick just wide of the target but Hamble were to be seen more of an attacking source. The visitors did pull a goal back with thirteen minutes to go, Cox the scorer firing home from the edge of the box. Despite taking the game to City to the final minutes though Hamble could not break down that City rearguard again. It would have made for an interesting final few minutes had one of their chances nestled in the back of the net in the closing stages.
