FA Vase Round 3

Yaxley 2 Winchester City 4

For the opening forty-five minutes of this F A Challenge Vase Third Round clash, there appeared to be not much contest for City from United Counties League outfit Yaxley. In a rural setting on the outskirts of Peterborough, City marched into a three-goal interval lead and seemed destined for the last thirty-two of the competition. Midway through the second period the script had changed and it was eventually a relieved City that scored in the final minute of the match to give them a two-goal victory.

City started strongly. In the first sixty seconds Tommy McCormick found himself sprawling in the Yaxley penalty area but referee Mr R Steans from Leicester, waved play on. Thirty second later a throw in from Matthew Bicknell saw Ian Mancey take the ball in his stride before unleashing a shot that had home goalkeeper Steve Corry beaten but saved by the crossbar.

The home side offered little in attack but Michael Goode did see a header from a Ricky Hailstone corner cleared away by Bicknell on seven minutes. But it was City that were forcing their way forward and creating the better chances. The commitment of Christer Warren on ten minutes set up another chance for Mancey but Corry was equal to the striker’s effort. As play switched to the opposite end Yaxley’s Simon Acton shot high over the bar.

Jamie Musselwhite saw a twenty five yard shot go just past the post whilst Yaxley’s danger man Mark Paul shot over being restricted to long range efforts.

City deservedly went ahead on twenty minutes. Mark Jones lofted the ball beyond the static Yaxley defence, Mancey collecting the ball before shooting low past the advancing Corry for the opening goal. Eight minutes later and City were two gaols ahead. Ian Buckman's throw from the right flank allowed Warren to work his way into the area before slipping a pass to Mancey who coolly slotted home his second of the afternoon.

On thirty-six minutes the strong travelling City contingent in a 215 crowd were rocked when Paul en route to goal and seemingly not able to get the ball under control fell in the box under the attention of Matt Davies. Yaxley were awarded a penalty and referee Steans took an age to produce a yellow card. The Yaxley skipper Hailstone saw his penalty pushed away by David Hook who then had to be back alert to make a smart double save from the eagerly arriving Paul to snatch up any rebounds.

Five minutes on from that little scare and City must have thought their work for the afternoon was complete. Shaun Dyke and warren exchanged passes allowing Buckman to run through to fire home the third goal via the underside of the crossbar. There was still time before the interval to see Dyke cut in from the right but shot straight at Corry then Warren and McCormick set up Mancey but the striker shot over. Yaxley also created another chance as the first half drew to a close but Hook saved from Acton.

Yaxley changed formation at the start of the second period then the introduction of substitute James Picillo threatened to change the course of the game. Within six minutes of the midfielders arrival to the action Hailstones inch perfect ball into the path of Picillo saw him drive the ball past Hook and Yaxley were back in the game.

More nervousness to follow for City when two minutes later the home side netted a second goal. Jimmy Deans lofted forward pass behind the City defence saw Paul run through and slot a shot wide of the advancing Hook and it was back to a contest again.

For a few minutes City looked vulnerable but the home side only produced one more attack of note with Mark Kingston shooting into the side netting. City steadied themselves and were largely untroubled for the home side for the final quarter of an hour of the match. It was met with relief though when City did restore their two-goal advantage albeit in the final minute of the match. Substitutes Ben Kneller and Danny Wakefield the architect and the finisher. Kneller having replaced the limping Dyke ran at the full back from his right wing position before laying the ball into the path of Wakefield to fire past Corry and send City safely through into the Fourth Round.
