Saturday 10th September
Sydenhams Wessex League
Winchester City 4 Poole Town 0
City recorded their third successive victory en route to scoring sixteen goals from those games and keeping a clean sheet for all three games, returning to the top of the table albeit having played more games than their closest rivals.
Promoted from Division One last season, the Poole Town line up looked strong, though they posed City few problems. As early as the eighth minute Ian Buckman broke from defence into the Poole Town penalty area and as he pulled his foot back to shoot, he was clipped by Ryan Woolfenden and referee Mr J Amey pointed straight to the spot. Liam Greens fiercely struck penalty gave goalkeeper Lee Mitchener no chance.
City kept plugging away with some good moves, a low drive from Toby Sumner was pushed away by the feet of Mitchener, from a Green free kick Franny Dolan glanced a header just wide.
After the early City attacks, Poole looked as though they were working their way back into the game. Skipper for the day Matty White fired just over from long range but it was not long before City took back over the ascendancy. Jamie Musselwhite had headed over a Shaun Dyke cross before Musselwhite added City’s second goal on forty-one minutes. Green finding himself in an unfamiliar right wing position, lofted the ball into the six-yard box where Musselwhite had his first attempt blocked by Mitchener, but the striker managed to readjust himself whilst sat on the ground and turn the ball home.
The second period started somewhat subdued but it was not long before City made the game safe. Thirteen minutes had been played when Dyke shot into the ground seemingly the ball bouncing up and past Mitchener with the help of a deflection for City’s third goal.
Poole responded with Leigh Phillips heading a Gary Bartlett cross wide of the target, but City goalkeeper David Hook was merely a spectator. Ian Mancey was denied by another fine stop by Mitchener before City added their fourth goal on sixty-six minutes. Again it was from the penalty spot, Tommy McCormick played the ball into the path of Musselwhite who was hauled back by defender Graham Kemp and another penalty award. Liam Greens again fiercely struck the penalty and with another fine dive and strong hand by Mitchener the keeper can count himself unlucky not to have produced a stop, but the power of Greens kick was enough for City’s fourth goal.
Mitchener thwarted Musselwhite and Mark Lilley in the final quarter of an hour, whilst Poole’s best attempt of the afternoon was in the final minute when a low curling drive from Dave Sturgess was tuned away by Hook.
