Sydenhams Wessex League

Fareham Town 3 Winchester City 3

For the second time in five days, Winchester City left the field grateful of talking a point from a league fixture. The side that had previously gone six league matches without conceding a goal have now conceded five in two games. They retain their position at the summit of the Wessex League but on performances like this for how long.

For the neutral was worthy of the entrance money. Both sides attacked from the outset. Shaun Dyke provided a rising left foot drive early on that was just wide whilst Louis Savage for the home side created an opening from which Warren Hunt headed over the bar. Hunt was also denied by a fine save by the feet of David Hook. Savage also found himself in a good position but shot tamely at Hook.

City seemed to be settling when they opening the scoring midway through the first half. Thomas Kings forward high ball saw Jamie Musselwhite beaten in the air by Fareham defender Danny Horrell, but the ball only fell invitingly for Christer Warren to fire home a fierce shot from the edge of the box for his second goal for the club in two games.

Immediately following the goal Musselwhite was sent through on goal but his effort was saved by the legs of home goalkeeper Tyrone Hoare. The save assisted Fareham greatly as on twenty-nine minute the home side were level. Having collected the ball just inside the City half Hunt raced through unchallenged into the City area before placing a shot beyond Hook and into the net.

City’s response saw Liam Green fir a shot wide but the home side were now in the ascendancy. Dean Blake and Savage combined but Savage was overstretching to be able to worry Hook with his shot, which was followed but a cross from Luke Middleton arriving for Savage to have another goalbound attempt that was blocked by the City defence.

Thirty-eight minutes played and City were behind. A corner to the far post from Blake saw a melee of players arriving and Middleton turned away to claim the home sides second goal from his header.

Jamie Austen replaced Tommy McCormick for the start of the second half and Dyke was switched to the left flank but City failed to find their early impetus. Former Portsmouth youngster Hunt dispossessed Franny Dolan four minutes into the second period but Hook was equal to the strikers effort. On fifty-eight minutes though Coty were two goals behind. David King’s defensive header bounced into the legs of Dolan and the ball ran into the path of Hunt who made not mistake for his second goal of the afternoon.

With further tactical changes with the introduction of Mark Lilley, City were starting though to ask questions of the Fareham rearguard. Green had another effort clear the bar on the hour, then Lilley peeled away from his defender but shot across the face of goal.

Savage had a chance to seal the game totally for Fareham after seventy six minutes but he shot over the bar and two minutes later Fareham were cursing that miss when City retrieved a goal. A Dyke cross saw an excellent header from Musselwhite giving Hoare no chance and City were fighting again.

Blake curled an effort wide for Fareham and City manger played his final card by withdrawing David King and replacing him with Toby Sumner leaving City with a three back line in lieu of four which they had been playing. The move paid off with City scoring the equaliser in the eighty fourth minute. The goal of the afternoon, with ex Fareham striker Musselwhite watching the net bulge with an superb thirty five yard strike after taking the ball from Horrell.

City failed to break the Fareham defence down again, disappointed with the small amount of stoppage time played by the referee of under two minutes for the second period when they went in search of a winner.
