Winchester City 0 Southampton Academy 5

Disregard for the final result although disappointing for City fans. For Hampshire football you must look on the positive side and hope that Southampton can keep this current crop of youngsters for a few years, then not only will they return to the Premiership, they will be a force to be reckoned with.

City gave a trial to 19 year old midfielder Phil John just released from Hayes although he played in an unfamiliar right sided role, and Jamie Austen although a second half substitutive ma\de his first appearance of the season. But for City they were without Mark Jones, Shaun Dyke and Toby Sumner.

The fledgling pairing of both Kings Tom and Dave found the afternoons work of a very high quality. The movement and technique of their full time opponents shone through during the whole match. Players for the Academy who constantly caught the eye were Nathan Dyer a diminutive fast raiding striker and also Simon Gillett.

The warnings were evident from early on, an eighth minute glancing header from Feliciano Condesso from Dyers cross put Southampton one goal ahead. Another goal was added on the half hour mark David McGoldrick turning home another Dyer delivery.

An acrobatic attempt from Jamie Musselwhite was the best that City had to offer as they rarely troubled visiting goalkeeper Andrew McNeil.

A series of changes mainly from City during the second period saw several fringe players thrust into the action. But the fitness of the visiting Academy side paid dividends with three goals on a four-minute spell in the last ten minutes of the match.

With eighty minutes played an excellent Academy move ended with Eddie Anaclet turning the ball past Alan Walker-Harris. Two minutes later Anaclet claimed a second goal for himself for the afternoon. Eighty four minutes and substitute Josh Mulvany was celebrating turning home another Dyer cross into the area.

Two fine stops from Walker-Harris in the closing stages from Adam Lallana and Condesso prevented the Academy side from adding to their score.
