Sydenhams Wessex League
Portland United 0 Winchester City 8
Winchester City returned to winning ways, scoring eight goals against a poor Portland United side. City had their problems to contend with, Toby Redwood not featuring for the side and with Mark Jones out through injury there was a recall to the side for Jamie Austen and David King. Also making a return to the side for his first Wessex League outing of the season was Shaun Dyke.
Dyke was in action from the outset, his cross on forty five seconds was met by An Ian Mancey header but home goalkeeper Steve May produced a save that was the warning for the busy afternoon he had in front of him. Liam Green, Jamie Musselwhite and Tommy McCormick all combined on the quarter of an hour before McCormick drilled a low shot wide of the target. A minute later Mancey's turn and shot was only just scrambled away by May.
The first City goal arrived midway through the opening half. Toby Sumner thundered a shot from the edge of the box that was blocked by the diving body of Simon Linard, referee Mr D Treleaven adjudged the ball had struck the defenders arm and a penalty was awarded. Liam Green sent May the wrong way from the penalty spot.
Following a corner on twenty five minutes May produced a fine double stop to halt the scoring further from both Mancey and Stewart Lang. The home side though could not stop the City flow. Twenty-seven minutes Dave Kings pass into the area was controlled on the chest of Musselwhite before firing past May for goal number two.
Portland had appeals for a penalty waved away after an Austen challenge on Matt White, but the home side rarely produced any efforts on the City goal. Musselwhite had another effort saved by May before he added his second goal of the afternoon on the stroke of half time. A Sumner cross-field pass to McCormick saw the left-winger bring the ball under control before sending a cross to the far post where Musselwhite fired home.
The goal count was certain to increase in the second period. Musselwhite rolled a shot just wide of the target and had a header that hit the back of the net disallowed for an infringement as well as Mancey having a shot saved by May before City netted a fourth goal on fifty two minutes. A lofted cross by Dyke was fumbled by keeper May and Mancey turned the loose ball home.
Mancey was celebrating again six minutes later heading home a Dyke cross following good work from Liam Green. A Sumner cross ended with a Mancey header which produced an excellent fingertip stop by May then following a Dyke corner Mancey with his back to goal attempted a backwards lob shot that went just over. Mancey was not to be denied though and finally grabbed his hat trick goal after sixty-three minutes heading home another Dyke cross.
The Portland goal somehow survived another barrage of attacks on sixty seen minutes both Mancey and Musselwhite were thwarted with a mixture of defensive blocks, Steve may or the woodwork in an amazing sequence of events.
Dyke was the provider of City’s seventh goal on seventy-two minutes, his cross this time headed home by Musselwhite. Tom Vavrecka seemed to have netted his first City first team goal on seventy-six minutes but an offside decision stopped the teenagers moment of glory.
Ten minutes remained when Linard saw a second yellow card brandished at home for kicking the ball away and the defender made the long trudge back to the dressing room down the whole length of the pitch. City were still not finished, McCormick saw another effort pushed away by May before the final goal arrived on eighty-four minutes. Again the assist was Dyke, his cross palmed away by May but Mancey stabbed the ball home for his fourth of the game.
