Saturday 6th August
Pre-season Friendly
Winchester City 4 Walton Casuals 1
City showed visitors Walton Casuals no charity in the first half of this last pre season fixture for them on Saturday. Up against a side that gained promotion during the summer of which City were denied, having won their own Combined Counties League with ease, City stormed home three goals in the opening half hour.
Despite some early pressure and a narrow escape to the City goal, City keeper Dave Hook took command of his area in the opening half. City opened the lead after a quarter of an hour. Stuart Brown saw his goalbound attempt clawed away from the goal by visiting goalkeeper Danny Andres but skipper Mark Jones prodded the ball home.
Five minutes a Mark Lisk cross was headed home by Brown for his first City goal. On twenty-six minutes Brown doubled his talky with a powerful shot from the edge of the area.
Walton hit back almost immediately with a long punt downfield by keeper Andrews which saw Michael Carpenter run beyond the City defence before lofting the ball over Hook and into the net to reduce the deficit.
Six minutes before the interval Ian Mancey restored City’s three goal margin, after the ball was not cleared by the Walton defence, Mancey steadied himself before firing low into the corner of the net.
There was no further addition to the score. The closets to a second half goal was five minutes from time when Casuals’ Anthony Gale from outside of the area struck a shot that hit the bar but went away to safety.
