Russell Cotes Cup

Winchester City 5 Blackfield & Langley 0

Progress to the quarter finals of the Russell Cotes Cup was the rewards for this victory over Sydenhams Wessex League Division Two side Blackfield & Langley. A spirited display by the opposition that saw them hit with a three goals in a four-minute spell midway through the second period.

Having rested a few usual members of the starting eleven, manager Steve Tate saw a mixture of the Reserves squad deal quite comfortably with Wessex League opposition, a substitute bench complete of up and coming talent from the clubs current second string.

One of the prospects that have been continually knocking on the first team door notched the first goal on thirteen minutes before going on to complete his hat trick. Kneller’s first goal of the evening was a header from a Tommy McCormick cross. The first half as a whole though was a series of missed chances by the City attack. Their biggest concern was the loss of Mat Jones with the recurrence of an injury after only twenty-five minutes.

The second half started in the same vein, Kneller saw a good effort saved by visiting goalkeeper Nigel Green. City keeper Mark Zawadski needed attention for the first time of two incidents in the evening, on fifty six minutes having come from his area to clear the ball but was felled by a challenge that created Blackfield an opportunity with Dave Snowden firing towards goal but the shot was cleared.

Musselwhite broke through three minutes later but Green saved his shot the ball falling for Kneller to notch his second goal of the evening.

On seventy minutes Kneller was celebrating his hat trick. Shaun Dykes pass into the feet of Kneller saw the striker turn and fire home past Green for his thirty eighth goal of the season in first team and reserve team football.

This started a golden spell fro City, a minutes later and Kneller was the creator for Danny Wakefield to bag his first senior goal for the club slotted neatly past Green, followed two minutes later by a Dyke cross being headed home by Musselwhite.

Blackfield were reduced to ten men for the final five minutes of the match, Zawadski the victim of a challenge from Blackfield substitute Lea James was saw red by referee Mr B Waymark.
