Sydenhams Wessex League Cup

Winchester City 2 Locksheath 0

City progressed into Round Three of the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup and another home tie against either Downton or Micheldever after this victory over Division Two side Locks Heath.

It was a good display from the side from the lower division, playing some neat football throughout the game and creating a few chances never letting City have an easy ride into the next round.

The lively pairing up front for City of Ben Kneller and Mark Lilley caused concern in the Locks Heath defence, the pace of both players always unsettling the rearguard. Shaun Dyke also caused a trail of disarray on several right wing forays. Only fifty-five seconds had been played already time for a free kick for City wide on the right, whipped in low by Dyke, but fortunately for Locks Heath, Lilley missed his shot completely and Kneller blazed high over the bar.

Lilley saw a shot saved by Locks Heath goalkeeper Matt Willsher on five minutes, and three minutes later, Kneller turned his defender sent in a low cross which Lilley scooped over the bar. City had to be alert in defence as Locks Heath immediately created a breakaway, Ashley Howard chasing the long through ball trying to round City goalkeeper M<ark Zawadski, the City keeper brought a fine save at the strikers feet.

After quarter of an hour, Kneller held his run well before collecting a Ben Thomson through ball but Knellers effort was saved by Willsher. Ten minutes later Kneller and Lilley combined again only for Lilley to fire off target. Locks Heath created two openings on the half hour a low shot from Jimmy Cuthbert as saved by Zawadski for a corner and from the resultant flag kick Howard hooked the ball over the bar.

As play swung from end to end Dykes run and lofted shot was just wide, Howard brought another fine stop from Zawadski. Zawadski then launched a long high drop kick that fell invitingly for Lilley just outside the Locks Heath penalty area but Willsher was equal to Lilleys attempt on goal.

Locks Heath defence had to be concentrating all the time as City produced some strong attacking moves. With two minutes to go to the interval it was a poor ball out of the Locks Heath defence that fell for Ben Kneller, twenty five yards from goal and with Dyke calling for in a wide position, Kneller unleashed a shot that flew into the top of the net clipping the underside of the cross bar en rote and City were ahead.

Thirteen minutes into the second period and City made sure of their progress into the next round. Dyke the provider with a right wing cross giving Kneller the easiest of headers inside the six-yard box for his second goal of the evening.

Chances that followed were few and far between unlike the first period. The final best two chance of the game probably falling to the visitors, Matthew Bicknell cleared the ball off the line from Peter Lines as Locks Heath tried to get back into the game and Zawadski produced another fine stop from Locks Heath substitute Dave Matthews to keep his clean sheet.
