Sydenhams Wessex League
Winchester City 2 Bournemouth 2
In front of a bumper attendance of 394, City failed to record their eighth consecutive victory, staring off in performance winning style, but ending the game content with a point against second placed Bournemouth.
The surprise of the Wessex League so far this season, Bournemouth took time to settle. City had a host of opportunities in the opening half. A Shaun Dyke free kick enabled Franny Dolan to lay the ball across the face of goal but no City finishing touch could be applied. An exceptional double save by the visiting Jason Harvell prevented City taking the lead from Jamie Musselwhite.
Bournemouth were prevented to counter attacks and from one such break, Karim Bennsaouda, playing his first match since a twenty-one day suspension, fired a shot across the goal. This was to prove costly for Bournemouth, as City were soon to be ahead. With twenty eight minutes played, Christer Warren’s shot from the edge of the area took a wicked deflection that left Harvell flat footed and Warren had registered his first goal for City.
Bournemouth’s retaliation saw Richard McCabe fire narrowly off target but it was still Winchester who had the upper hand, Dave King being the closest to adding to the scoring watching his header from a Dyke corner cleared off the line.
The second half started in the same fashion. City went that second goal ahead after just four minutes. Good work from Jamie Musselwhite saw his goalbound effort blocked but fall just right for Ian Mancey to turn home his thirteenth goal of the season.
With City supporters believing that the game was over as a contest, they were proved totally wrong; the goal seemed to spur Bournemouth more so than the home side. Bournemouth brought themselves right back in the game with fifty six minutes played. David Hook parried a drive from Mark Dancer only for McCabe to fie home from close range putting a different perplection on the evening entirely.
With none of the large crowd wanting to miss the outcome, the game edged to and fro for the balance of the match. It was the visiting side though that created the better openings. Bournemouth substitute Charlie Dibba scooped the ball over the bar when well placed before they grabbed an equaliser. With only three minutes of normal time remaining, Dance skipped away down the left flank and delivered a cross to the far posit where Bennsaouda headed Bournemouth level.
There was only going to be one side if any would win after that. Bournemouth were on a high and it was four minutes into stoppage time when an excellent stop by David Hook from Dancer saved City a point.
