Tuesday 2nd August
Pre-season Friendly
Winchester City 0 Basingstoke Town 1
City lost this home friendly against Nationwide South side Basingstoke Town by a single goal scored on fifty-eight minutes after a spell of sustained Basingstoke pressure. Making his debit on a trial basis for the visitors former Wycombe Wanderers striker Lewis Cook, turned inside two defenders before firing a low left foot shot into the right hand side of the goal.
Up until that time Basingstoke fielding former City player Lloyd Webber had been matched in all areas by the home side. Ex Town old boys now in City colours in Mark Lisk, Ian Mancey and Toby Sumner all gave impressive performances against their former side.
Midway through the opening half Stuart Brown was denied by a double saved by new Basingstoke goalkeeper Rob Bullivant, and not long after Paul Burnett fired over following a Sumner cross.
A minute following the Basingstoke goal City were unfortunate not to be level when Brown shot against the bar. Town had a chance to increase their lead when Martin Whiddett was denied by an excellenmt Alan Walker-Harris stop.
City thought they had equalised seven minutes from time, a Mark Lilley header was cleared up onto the bar by substitute Brett Cooper and Basingstoke cleared the danger.
