A F C Totton 0 Winchester City 4

Winchester City produced their best performance of the season by far to sweep away A F C Totton in a four goal onslaught. Manager Steve Moss had a number of selection problems with Gary Green and Jamie Austen both suspended whilst Adam, Rogers, Mark Jones and Mark Lisk are still on the injured list.

With a shuffled formation that saw Franny Dolan switched to centre back in a 4-4-2 formation Ian Buckman appeared for the first time this season following an injury. The way City started let that all fade into insignificance. Only four minutes had been played when Tommy McCormick’s sweeping cross field ball was collected by Shaun Dyke before coolly slipping the ball past home goalkeeper Peter Houkes to put City ahead.

After a brief flurry of Totton pressure another quick City break on seventeen minutes saw Dykes cross headed just over by Ian Mancey. A second goal was inevitable; City goalkeeper David Hook did not have one direct shot on goal all evening. On the half hour the second City goal did arrive. Hooks clearance was headed on by the leaping Mancey and Jamie Musselwhite held off his defender before firing low past Houkes for goal number two.

Totton had appeals for a penalty waved away by referee Mr D Beament but City were always far superior. On the stroke of half time City had two further chances to increase their lead, Dykes whipped cross to the near post ended with Manceys shot saved by Houkes, then a poor defensive back pass allowed Musselwhite a chance on goal but he shot straight at Houkes. For the home side Mark Osman drilled a shot across the face of goal.

Four minutes into the second period and City had notched their third goal of the evening. McCormick the provider with a left wing cross to the far post where Musselwhite arrived to bury his tenth league goal from seven games.

With the game over as a contest Mancey netted in the sixty ninth minute deflecting home a goal bound Dolan shot from a Dyke corner, but all in all Totton had no answer to City’s attacking movement.

With the game drifting to a close, Mark Lilley was set up by Liam Green and Mancey but his effort was blocked and Dave King also saw a shot cleared off the line.
