Hampshire Senior Cup - 3rd Round
Winchester City 3 Hayling United 1

Facing a potentially difficult match at home against Hayling United in the Hampshire Senior Cup last night, City rose to the challenge to go through
to the Quarter finals.

Hayling, who are tipped to take the Wessex League Division 1 title this season, started at a furious pitch and penned Winchester into their own half for a period but gradually Citys higher level of football began to win the day and they began to create chances.

Ross Diaper, making his first team debut, put the ball over the bar from a Jamie Musselwhite pass and from a free kick Mark Jones put in a diving
header which also went over the bar.

At the other end Dave Hook was called into action but easily held a Hayling shot and Sean Thurgood cleared a difficult situation with a long upfield
punt. With the pressure off Lloyd Webber managed to get forward with Pete Smith and Danny Wakefield providing width on the wings.

Citys breakthrough came in the 40th minute when Smith worked his way into the box to score a great individual goal.

City could have gone two up when Diaper put a searching cross into the box and Muselwhite was an inch for touching it in but just could not make a connection.

Nathan Bailey came on at the start of the second half in the place of Danny Wakefield as City moved up a gear and put the game beyond Hayling in a fabulous ten minute period.

Neil Champion set them on their way in the 49th minute with a superbly hit free kick that the Hayling keeper either failed to see or completely misjudged as he stood rooted to the spot has the ball hit the back of the net.

In the 52nd minute Mark Gamble was rewarded for all his hard work with a swivel and overhead kick for goal number three.

Manager Steve Moss, with an eye on Saturdays game, brought on Tom King and Chris Flood and whilst the team settled down again the spotlight fell on Webber, Champion, Jones and Thurgood who showed real class as they dominated midfield and snuffed out any Hayling threat.

The visitors were rewarded for their efforts in the 80th minute, however, with a consolation goal but by them City were cruising into the next round.
