Winchester City 0 - Brook House 1
Sorry City squander the chances
by John Moody
In an uninspiring game Winchester City had the chances to win and in the end threw away a golden opportunity of grabbing a point when Jamie Musselwhite?s penalty (84th minute) was saved by James Harry after Gary McLaughlin was sent off for hand ball.
Three chances fell to Mark Gamble of Winchester in the first half. After a good run he put his shot over the bar and his second effort was a superb
shot from a dropping ball which went just wide and his third was well saved.
City had the best of the attacking play and a long range shot from Shaun Thurgood went wide and a Danny Wakefield cross flashed across the goal only needing a touch.
The best chance fell to Ian Mancey who put in a diving header from a cross by Neil Champion which was was bundled away for a corner.
Winchester?s injury hoodoo hit again in the 40th minute when James Davis crumbled in agony as he turned and an ambulance was called and he was admitted to hospital with suspected ligament damage. Chris Flood substituted.
Flood was involved early in the second half when he put in a shot from a Gamble cross but he mishit the ball and the keeper saved easily.
The ambulance was called for the third time in two matches when a Brook House player also sustained a serious injury early in the second half and he joined Davis in the same hospital.
Rather against the run of play Brook House took the lead in the 61st minute when a sweeping crossfield move resulted in Elliott Frost netting from close range.
City now mounted the pressure and Gamble set up a chance for Ian mancey who shot straight at the keeper and Musslewhite managed to force him into another save a few minutes later.
Tom Vavrecka came on in the 72nd minute for Wes O?Connor and this added to the pressure on Brook House and eventfully Gamble slammed in a goalbound shot which beat the keeper only for substitute McLaughlin to handled on the line. The referee had no option but to send him off and but unfortunately for Winchester Musselwhite?s spot kick was well saved by ?keeper James Harry.
The last ten minutes belonged to City and Mancey had three good chances to score but his luck was out and the Brook House goal led a charmed life..
Still suffering from injuries and suspension, City never got to grips with the game, the experience of Mark Jones and Lloyd Webber was too often restricted to defending in their own half and the suspension of Pete Smith left a gap on the flank and consequently the forwards had little support. Neil Champion and Thurgood worked hard but the team did not operate as a unit.
City: David Hook, Danny Wakefield, James Davis, Mark Jones, Sean Thurgood, Wesley O?Connor, Lloyd Webber, Neil Champion, Ian Mancey, Jamie Musselwhite, Mark Gamble, substitutes: Chris Flood (40th), Nathan Bailey, Tom Vavrecka (72), Mark Zawadski.
