CITY STRUGGLE AT OXFORD
Still struggling to field a settled side, Manager Steve Moss, had to juggle with his small squad yet again for the trip to oxford City on Saturday 23rd
December 2006.
City paid the penalty early on as they failed to find a rhythm. Mark Avery headed Oxford in front in the 11th minute, from a corner. He had drifted
out left and was unmarked as the ball flighted in.
Despite the setback City replied strongly and Sean Thurgood headed the ball back into the penalty from the bye-line and Ben Wright nodded it on only for Jamie Musselwhite to put his shot over the bar. Musselwhite returned the favour a few minutes later when Wright also put his shot over the bar.
Some good interplay between Adam Aimable and Tom Verecka resulted in the latter shooting past the post.
Just as City appeared to be settling in they lost James Davis who was hit in the face by the ball and suffered a badly swollen eye socket and cheek.
Chris Flood substituted in the 26th minute.
City had a lucky escape when a snap shot by Oxfords Harry Burnley hit the outside of the post and bounced out of danger.
Just before half time a long-range shot by Dan Wakefield narrowly missed with the Oxford keeper scrambling to get across his goal.
Oxford nearly went two up early in the second half when Lee Rendell?s shot ran along the crossbar but luckily ran off for a goal kick.
With City making little progress Stuart Lang replaced Ross Diaper and Ian Mancey came on for Wakefield on the hour. Unfortunately before he acclimatised to the pace Lang was caught cold and rounded by Justn Merritt and Billy Beechers buried a powerful shot from his pass to increase Oxford?s lead.
City now spent a period under pressure when Thurgood earned the man of the match accolade with sound defensive work and some penetrating long balls out of defence. He was well supported by Lloyd Webber who had another fine game.
The nearest City came to scoring in the second half was when Thurgood fed Flood who cut in and hit the post with a good shot.
City: David Hook, Adam Aimable, James Davis, Tom Vavrecka, Sean Thurgood, Ross Diaper, Lloyd Webber, Dan Wakefield, Ben Wright, Jamie Musselwhite, Peter Smith, Substitutes: Chris flood (26th), Stewart Lang (60th), Ian Mancey (60th), Rorry Anderson.
