City fall at the last kick City made the long trip to Kent on Tuesday evening for their F.A. Cup replay at Cray Wanderers and once again gave away an early goal, on this occasion in the 5th minute from a corner.
City came close when Pete Smith saw a free kick tipped over the bar and the resultant corner was also pushed over the bar by the ?keeper. Jamie Musselwhite also pulled a shot across the goal but it eveaded the far post.
City gave a debut to Combined Services player Wes O?Connor and young Chris Flood started upfront in a largely unchanged side from Saturday?s game.
City were back on terms a couple of minutes into the second half when Musselwhite scored from close range but Cray snatched the lead back in the 54th minute when David Hook failed to collect cleanly and the ball was bundled in at the far post.
With time running out Dave Goss came to City?s rescue with a powerfully headed goal from a free kick in the 84th miniute.
Both periods of extra time failed to break the deadlock and the match was decided by the lottery of penalties.
Hook managed to get his hand to the first Cray kick but the luck was against City as he deflected the ball onto a post and it rebounded off his back into the net. Musselwhite and Richard Mealey scored with their kicks. O?Connor beat the keeper with his but the ball hit the post and bounced clear. Lloyd Webber converted his spot kick but as Cray scored their fifth there was no need for City to take their last - a cruel way to exit the F.A. Cup.
