Lymington & New Milton 1 - Winchester City 6

CITYS SLICKERS SLAM SIX AGAIN!

Winchester City put on their best performance of the season on Wednesday night and in a pulsating second half demoralised a strong Lymington and New Milton side with a display of attacking football that carried on from the six goals they scored on Saturday. The 13th December certainly proved unlucky for the Linnets as Citys new signings Ben Wright and Adam Amable made their debuts.

The first ten minutes of the match was even as both sides probed for an opening and it was Wright who got in the first shot, just wide of the far post. Gradually City piled on the pressure and the Lymington defence had to work overtime to combat moves from Mark Gamble, Wright and Ian Mancey. Pete Smith worked hard on the left flank and Tom Vavrecka put in a good performance in midfield.

The breakthrough, however, came from a mistake by the Lymington keeper, Joe McCormack. In the 18th minute he mis-hit a clearance straight to Wright, who controlled the ball and kept his head as he flighted it back into the empty net from 30 yards. A few minutes later he found himself free on the edge of the penalty area but on this occasion put his shot wide.

Towards the end of the half Lymington came more into the game but found Citys Sean Thurgood in superb form, well backed by James Davies and Danny Wakefield with LLoyd Webber playing an unfamiliar game in defence. Franny Dolan also proved a lynch-pin in defence but also came forward when required and created chances from midfield.

Ex-City player Christer Warren equalised from a free kick in the 39th minute with keeper Mark Zawadski just failing to get a hand to a well-flighted shot to the top corner.

The second half proved to be one-way traffic after Mancey headed city back into the lead from a corner in the 49th minute.

Smith increased the lead (62nd) when shots from Gamble and Wright were parried in the box and Smith following up well smashed the loose ball home from close range. Eight minutes later (70th) City went three up when Wright put in a stinging shot that the keeper failed to hold and Gamble gratefully accepted the chance to put the rebound away.

Two more goals in the next five minutes sewed up the points for City. Mancey converted another classic header from a Smith corner (72nd) and then Wright juggled a free kick from Smith, before lifting the ball over the advancing keeper for goal number six.

Manager Steve Moss now brought on Adam Amable for Davies and Chris Flood for Mancey to see out the game.

Amable showed some neat touches and strength as he patrolled the midfield flank and Floods pace further confused an already bemused Linnets? defence.
