Bracknell Town 1 - 1 Winchester City
Winchester City travelled to Bracknell Town on a glorious summer’s afternoon last Saturday and found a heavy and bumpy pitch at Larges Lane which precluded flowing football.
In an evenly matched game it was City who showed first with Mark Lilley, putting in a shot which was easily gathered and then the same player provided a cross for Larbi Mekchiche to narrowly miss the far post.
Despite having the better of the early play City fell behind in the 13th minute when a break on the right saw Bracknell take the lead with a fine shot across keeper Clint Davies.
City hit back with Matt Bowler clipping the bar with a header and a good shot from Mekchiche being well saved.
City were back on even terms in the 26th minute when Mekchiche won the ball and threaded a pass for Ben Bosley to crack home from the edge of the box.
Just before half time a good move initiated by Lilley resulted in Adam George pulling his shot just wide.
Bracknell turned up the pressure early in the second half with City getting away with some sloppy clearances and seeing the ball hit their post with Davies floundering.
Manager Andy Leader made a change in the 57th minute when Brett Williams replaced Bosley and added a bit more to the attack. Adam Lang floated in a perfect free kick and Williams headed just over the bar with the keeper beaten.
The game turned in the 65th minute when the Robins’ Ian Brooks was sent off for retaliation after Lilley had brought him down but it was ten-man Bracknell who struck first hitting the City bar with the defence hesitating. From then on, however, it was the visitors who looked the most likely to win the game.
With time running out and City seeking the winner Terry Cox replaced Lilley and he made an immediate impact putting a diving header just over the bar.
Dave Allen also came off the bench to replace Mekchiche who had cramp and he, too, made an impact winning several headers in the box.
At the last gasp Williams scored a brilliant goal but was ruled offside, wildly disputed by City.
