Winchester City 0 Burnham 1
Facing top of the league Burnham on Saturday, City matched the league leaders in all aspects of the game but the visitors snatched the lead with the only bit of luck in the match and City were handed the bad luck which struck early.

In the first minute Matt Bowler rose well to head a free kick and the ball clipped the crossbar and rebounded away. An inch lower and the City would have taken the lead.

As Burnham got into their stride Clint Davies made a good diving save and then Terry Cox kicked a shot off the line. At the other end Dave Allen did well to win a corner and Cox placed the kick perfectly but Brett Williams appeared to have been knocked off the ball as he shaped for the header.

Scott Gilham and Adam George worked hard in midfield and the later was rewarded when he saw a long-range dive put the keeper into difficulty but he managed to scrabble the ball away.

Williams was replaced by Mark Lilley at the start of the second half but the half started badly for City when a defensive slip let in Blaise O’Brian who scored with an angled drive in the 47th minute.

Lilley certainly made a difference up front and combined well with Luke Hornsely on several occasion to set up chances but Burnham defended well. James Wilson and Adam Lang were allowed the luxury of advancing up the flank as City pressed Burnham back and Allen played himself into several good position but could not get in that killer touch.

In the 59th minute Manager Andy Leader took off Cox to be replaced by Matt Czastka as he tried to force the equaliser.

City’s bad luck struck again when a good appeal for a penalty was turned down almost on time and Bowler protesting too much found his name in the book, the fourth City player in a match which was played in good spirit and did not justify another rash of bookings.
