Winchester City completed their pre-season programme away to Ryman’s League Worthing on Saturday which gave Manager Andy Leader the last chance to look at his squad prior to the big British Gas Business Football League (previously known as the Southern League) kick off at home against Abingdon this Saturday, kick off 3.00p.m.
City started brightly on a beautiful sunny afternoon by the Sussex seaside and were the first to show when Dave Allen headed on for Brett Williams to put his shot just over the Worthing bar.
As the half progressed Worthing came more into the play, the experience of their loan signings from Brighton having an effect. In the 21st minute Milui Mlynowski laid the ball back for Richard Hudson to slam a shot against the City bar with keeper Clint Davies left helpless.
Davies was called into action an few minutes later when an acrobatic kick by Jamie Brotherton was well saved at the far post.
City had the misfortune to lose the services of Adam Geroge who was playing well in midfield with an injury and Sean Clouder substituted.
Allen was instrumental in setting up another chance for City when he won the ball swept out to the wing and crossed for Williams to again put his shot over the bar.
Worthing went ahead just before half time when a cross was headed on for Karl Akehurst to hit a fierce shot from 25 yards which beat Davies for pace.
The second half followed the pattern of the first with Worthing doing all the attacking and City defending well. Adam Lang and Steve Llewellyn in particular, in the City defence played well, supported by Tom Stone who probably was not having his best game after a series of impressive matches in the other friendlies.
City had their best period in the last ten minutes when Larbi Mekchiche had the chance to equalise but pulled his shot just wide of the far post with the keeper beaten.
