Gosport Borough 2 Winchester City 1
City travelled to Privett Park on Tuesday night to try and finish the job that they so nearly completed on Saturday but Gosport caught them cold and they struggled to get on terms in a first half that was below par.
It took only four minutes for City to go behind, a cross from the right was headed in with the defence flat-footed. They expereinced a period of intense pressure with another shot being hacked off the line and another narrowly missing a post.
City’s first attack saw Dave Allen place a header over the bar from an Adam Lang cross and a similar cross from Luke Hornsley was put wide by Brett Wiliams and that was really the sum of City’s chances.
As they struggled to find form their frustrations resulted in four bookings (two more were to come in the second half making the worse game of the season as far as disciplinary points were concerned).
Gosport went two up on the stroke of half time when a long clearance resulted in a solo run from Justin Bennett who scored a fine goal.
After a half-time blistering from Manager Andy Leader City hit back early in the second period when Adam Lang slotted home a goal from a free kick and for a period dominated play. Gosport, however, defened well and despite some penetration by Allen and Williams and several forays upfield by Matt Bowler City were unable to force the equaliser.
Hornsley was replaced by Ben Bosley in the 61st minute and Mark Lilley came off for Luke Stopforth in the 79th but the changes could not produce the result.
This Saturday City are at home to Godalming F.C. kick off 3.00p.m.
