Winchester City 0 Bashley 2
HAMPSHIRE SENIOR CUP 2nd ROUND
WINCHESTER CITY 0 BASHLEY 2
Attendance 130
Manager Andy Leader decided to use this match against Premier Division Bashley as a ‘proving ground’ for some of the players breaking into the First Team but eventually the opposition’s greater experience told in a match spoilt by sweeping rain.
City shaded the first half with some very attractive football in patches and set out their stall early when Brett Williams put in a cross that Matt Burke headed just wide and then James Roden had a shot blocked after a good build up which started at the back with a clearance from San Lockyer.
Steve Llewelyn put in a shot at distance which went wide and then persistence from Williams resulted in him sending Roden away for Carl Foster to force the keeper into a save.
Against the run of play at this stage Bashley took the lead through Joe Fisher who headed a corner home at the far post in the 29th minute after Clint Davies had beaten away a James Rowe shot.
City came back and Roden had a good shot well saved and some constructive play by Kyle Joryeff saw his cross cut out by the keeper and just before half time he forced the keeper into a diving save from a corner.
Bashley now put City under pressure and James Wilson and Matt Bowler in particular defended well with some support from Ben Morgan and linking play from Lockyer.
In an effort to take a look at all his available players the manager replaced Morgan with Matt Palmer at the start of the second half. and again City started the stronger but despite all his running Williams was often left as the sole man up-front and this lack of support was the team’s downfall as the Bashley defence always seemed to have time to clear.
The visitors went two-up in the 52nd minute when Richard Gillespie picked his spot after a quick build-up. Bashley then made Davies work hard to make a great save and then clipped a post with another shot.
Bowler was rested in the 54th minute to be replaced by Joe Wright who showed some nice touches when under pressure later in the game and in the 66th minute James Eyles came on for Matt Burke but even his pace could not open the Bashley defence.
Davies kept City in the game with a good save and at the other end Williams sent in a curling shot that was saved.
Bashley hit the City crossbar with a free kick and right on the whistle Williams had a shot saved for a corner.
CITY: Clint Davies, Sam Lockyer, Ben Morgan (Matt Plamer 46), Matt Bowler (Joe Wright 54), Steve Llewelyn, James Roden, Matt Burke (James Eyles 66), Brett Williams, Carl Foster, Kyle Joryeff, Unused Subs: Andy Smallpiece.
This Saturday City are at home to Tauton Town in the F.A. Trophy, kick off 3.00p.m.
