SOUTHAMPTON FA SENIOR CUP 1st ROUND
WINCHESTER CITY 6 BUSH HILL F.C. 1
Facing a potential disaster against Southampton Premier League Bush Hill on Tuesday night, City bounced back from their F.A. Cup exit on
Saturday to record an easy win.
Winchester had the better of the early exchanges with Kyle Joryeff going close with a free kick and then hitting a post with a cross. It only took the home side 13 minutes to open their account. Bush Hill failed to clear their lines as Brett Williams and and Ian Davies caused havoc in their penalty area and Adam George on the edge of the box slotted home the opener after picking up the loose ball.
A few minutes later George could have doubled the score when the visitors centre half, Kraig Chapman made a complete mess of a clearance but he put his shot over the bar with the keeper, Darren Weston, rooted to the spot. As City continued to press Joryeff forced the keeper into a good save.
Against the run of play Bush Hill got back on even terms in the 24th minute with a free kick which Liam Dyer managed to squeeze through a meleé of players with Clint Davies unsighted. This goal gave Bush Hill the incentive they needed and the focus switched to the City defence with Sam Lockyer and Matt Bowler having some work to do but they were not stretched. James Wilson began to make inroads down the flank and set up City’s second in the 26th minute. He worked his way into the Bush Hill penalty area and crossed for Williams to tuck the second goal away.
Two minutes later he recreated the movement but this time Williams failed to reach the ball but a lucky bounce off Ian Davies’ knee chalked up goal number three. In effect the game was won from this point and Williams made sure with a neatly worked fourth in the 40th minute when George threaded the ball through to him after a good run from midfield. George, Paul Worsfold and Andy Borthwick had the midfield area sewn up and controlled the remainder of the game.
Manager Andy Leader, with the game won, switched Davies for Carl Foster in the 50th minute and he soon set up Joryeff who shot over the bar. On the hour Lee Burch came on for Matt Bowler and in the 62nd minute Richard Gregory replaced Joryeff as the Manager weighed up his options for Saturday’s league match.
City continued to press and Lockyer forced the keeper into a brilliant diving save from a free kick. In the 69th minute Winchester went even further ahead in an incident which Williams claims he was robbed of his hat trick by Foster! A masterful exhibition of close control by Williams saw him beat the keeper and roll the ball towards the empty net but just before it crossed the line Foster made sure by side- footing it in!
Williams was not to be denied however, Gregory worked his way into the box and unselfishly laid on a chance which the centre forward powered home in the 78th minute.
Williams returned the compliment a few minutes later but Gregory put his shot just wide.
