City travelled to Uxbridge on Saturday and after a good first half the odds turned against them and they left pointless.
The first twenty minutes of the game saw some even sparring as both sides tried to gain the initiative. Matt Czastka and Sam Lockyer on the flanks did a lot of work but used the high high instead of the ball along the ground to more effect.
Uxbridge had the first real chance to take the lead when confusion between keeper Andy Baylis and Adam Lang resulted in a chance for the home side which was eventually cleared for a corner.
Lang made amends a few minutes later when he sent in an accurate cross but the ball would not fall fast enough for Mark Lilley to get in a telling shot. Lilley did manage to put in his shot in the next attack when Adam George laid on a chance for him which the keeper did well to shuffle away for a corner.
Winchester continued to press and Dave Allen chested the ball down and galloped on a run to lay on a chance for Ben Bosley who put the ball over the bar. Lilley also shot over the bar after picking up a long clearance and with only the keeper to beat lifted his shot skywards.
At the other end Baylis made a great save pushing the ball onto the bar from a far post header and then was called into action again to make another good save with his feet. Steve Llewellyn was rock steady in midfield and pumped several long balls upfield whilst under pressure.
Winchester took the lead in the 34th minute with a quality strike from George after a run into the box.
Uxbridge were level; three minutes later when James Pritchard’s cross was converted from close range by Lee Tunnell.
The Referee limped through the last few minutes after pulling a hamstring and the start of the second half was delayed while the Club’s two secretaries negotiated a replacement Assistant Referee to replace the senior man who took the middle for the second half.
The half was further delayed when City’s keeper Baylis was carried off with a neck injury in the first minute and Clint Davies substituted. The odds against City winning lengthened when Uxbridge went ahead when Mark Nicholls lifted the ball over the defence for Pritchard to volley past Davies who was wrong-footed by a deflection and a few minutes later the post saved them going further behind when Jaimie McClurg cracked the woodwork.
Manager Andy leader replaced Lilley with new signing Luke Hornsley from Rymans League Witten in the 57th minute to try and add a new dimension to the attack and he put in an early shot from a pass by Allen which was well saved.
City suffered another setback in the 67th minute when Bosley also had to leave the filed after receiving a knock to the head and thigh and was replaced by Jimmy Ball who put in some tremendous tackles in midfield as Uxbridge began to dominate. James Wilson and Matt Bowler combined well to break up one attack and in the counter move Bowler managed to move upfield to head for goal but was unfortunately wide.
Czastka put in a lot of hard work but put too many balls in the air where the tall Uxbridge defence handled the crosses well.
With time running out City began to apply the pressure. A pull back from the bye-line by Allen saw Hornsley just fail to connect with the keeper coming off his line and later he put a shot just wide. Wilson flighted in a cross and Bowler headed just over.
City: Andy Baylis, James Wilson, Adam Lang, Adan George, Matt Bowler, Steve Llewellyn, Matt Czastka, Dave Allen, Ben Bozley, Mark Lilley, Same Lockyer, Substitutes: Cling Davies (46th), Andy Darnton, Luke Hornsley (57th), Jimmy Ball (67th).
