Winchester City 0 - 2 Money field Sport
City crash out of the F.A Cup, missing five regulars manager Andy Leader was once again forced to shuffle his pack for City’s Preliminary round F.A. Cup tie at home to Wessex League Moneyfields Sports on Saturday. Having said that, all the players he brought in should have been capable of doing the job but somehow the side failed function and played their poorest game of the season so far.

Things started brightly however, with Mark Lilley putting in a good leap from a corner to head just over the Moneyfields’ bar. In the next attack  Adam Lang worked the ball up the flank and crossed for Luke Stopforth to shoot wide and from another corner Matt Bowler outjumped the Moneyfields’ defence but headed wide.

Disaster struck in the 16th minute when Adam George had the misfortune to lose the ball on the and Moneyfield’s George Way ran to the edge of the box and planted a pinpoint cross onto the head of Danny Gauntlet who scored at the far post.

From that point City struggled and never looked like equalising in the first half. From a free kick Matt Czastka was well placed but headed wide and that was about that. In fact City were lucky not to go in two-down when Monefield’s Guy Rutherford whipped a shot inches over the bar.

A couple of changes at half time, Larbi Mekechiche for Stopforth and Ben Bosley for Joe Wright, seemed to have been the right move as City stepped up the pressure. A cross from Lang was put just over the bar by Czastka and Dave Allen managed to get in a shot that was well saved.

After this initial surge City lapsed back into their first half play allowing Moneyfields to dominate midfield and defence.

With about a quarter of an hour to go Jimmy Ball came on to replace Lilley and his first task was to take a free kick which unfortunately was easily cleared.

The tie was lost in the 78th minute with the City defence hesitating, Way coasted in to score a superb shot leaving keeper Clint Davies helpless as the ball rocketed into the net.

City tried hard to get back in the game, Allen and Bosely both having chances which were blocked and Terry Cox worked his way into the box but over-ran the ball and his chance disappeared.

City: Clint Davies, Adan George, Sam Lockyer, Matt Bowler, Joe Wright, Matt Czastka, Dave Allen, Luke Stopforth, Terry Cox, Mark Lilley, Substitutes: Ben Bosley (46th), Larbi Mekchiche (46th), Brett Williams, Jimmy Ball (76th), Andy Bayliss.
