- City completed a very successful season, retaining their BGB Southern League status and celebrating in style at the Club presentation evening wearing "Fancy Dress"! More>>
Southampton Senior Cup favourites, Winchester City crashed out at the quarter final stage on Saturday in the most spectacular fashion losing 3-0 at home to Netley Central Sports, a team four divisions lower than themselves. City could not find a way of breaking down a team that could only offer the long ball and plenty of enthusiasm.
It was Netley who put in the first shot and won the first corner but it was City who should have opened the scoring when a great cross by Mark Lilley was just a fraction too high for Stuart Hussey who had the open goal in front of him. Netley took the lead in the 24th minute when City failed to clear a corner and at the second attempt the ball was bundled in at the near post.
City tried to hit back an a shot from Hussey was well saved by the Netley keeper who went on to have a superb game and certainly ensured his club’s historic victory. The visitors went two up in the 31st minute when keeper Clint Davies was slow to react to a long ball through the middle and he was beaten from close range.
As the half ended Lilley had a goal-bound shot well saved.
City spent almost the entire second half encamped in Netley territory but unfortunately could not force a goal. It looked as if their break had come in the 55th minute when Adam George was brought down in the penalty area, but the referee waved ‘play on’. On the hour Lilley was replaced by Tom Riddell and City began to put some more effective attacks togther. Dave Allen went close and James Wilson put a long-range shot narrowly wide.
The introduction of James Davis and Matt Czastka added a bit of variety to City’s play and a Hussey cross to Davis forced another good save from the Netley keeper and then Riddell shot wide when well placed. With City pressed well forward they were inevitably caught on the break and Netley scored their third goal in the 80th minute.
