Winchester City 1 Godalming Town 1

A penalty 3 minutes from the start and another 3 minutes from the end decided City’s home game against Godalming Town on Saturday. This was the first time that the two clubs had met in a league match.

In the first attack of the match Dave Allen was adjudged to have been knocked off the ball when going for a header in the box and the referee awarded a penalty. Adam George netted from the spot. Godalming nearly struck back when Clint Davies miss-timed a cross and with the open goal beckoning the ball was lobbed over the bar. At the other end Sam Lockyer put a header over the bar from a free kick.

As the game flowed from end to end Matt Bowler made a timely clearnce in the City box and a few minutes later Allen headed over the Godalming keeper but could not put enough power on the ball and the keeper managed to get back and clear. Matt Czastka and Adam Lang were particularly effective on the wing and Mark Lilley, Brett Williams and Allen always looked like they would score. On the whistle Godalming pressed and Citry managed to hack two clearances away, James Wilson clearing to Steve Llellwyn and Matt Bowler heading upfield.

City were again the first to show at the start of the second half when good work by Lilley unfortunately resulted in a tame shot from Williams. He did, however, put in a more telling shot in another attack which the keeper did well to save and he also laid on a chance for Czastka but his shot was cut out by a defender.

As City pressed Lockyer put in a tremendous 30 yard drive which was just wide and Bowler forced the keeper into a one-handed save, The last period of the game belonged to Godalming when several chances went begging and in a goalmouth melleé they had three shots all of which were cleared. They got their reward in the 87th minute when they too were awarded a penalty for a push in the box and James Blason put the kick away for the equaliser.

A draw was probably a fair result for two evenly matched sides. This Saturday City are away to Oxford City.

CITY AT HOME AGAIN IN SOUTHAMPTON SENIOR CUP
Winchester City have been drawn at home for the third successive round of the Southampton Senior Cup and face Hedge End Ranges on a date to be agreed in November. A win will put City through to the last eight. Surprisingly City’s main rivals in this competition, Eastleigh Reserves were knocked out by Bush Hill in the last round.
