Winchester City 1 Windsor and Eton 2

City travelled to a frosty Windsor on Wednesday evening and despite the bitter cold the pitch held up well and once again having their fair share of the game City fell to a single goal defeat. The weather obviously had an effect on attendance with just 39 paying to come through the gate and with the officials and pass holders the gate hardly rose much above 50. At one stage City's programme edior, Ian Denness, had sole occupation of the terrace behind the bottom goal!

Windsor started strongly with City keeper, Clint Davies called into action early saving at point blank range and then tipping a free kick over the bar in the first couple of minutes. At the other end Luke Hornsley tested the Royalists' custodian with a good shot and then Matt Bowler playing with a number 5 on his shirt but tasked with goal scoring goals got his head to a cross which went just wide.

Windsor took the lead in the 9th minute in a sweeping move that left City exposed and Davies was powerless to stop a dipping shot from the edge of the area. It did not take City long to get back on even terms. Adam Lang sent over a free kick and a diving Dave Allen headed home. It was Allen who also had the next chance but this time from a corner his header was just over the bar. As the half ended Terry Cox had a free kick tipped over the bar when a goal looked on. James Wilson, Scott Gilham and Matt Czastka, all worked hard on the flanks and down the middle but a solid defence held firm.

City were hit early in the second half (51st minute) when a dropping ball was hit on the volley and again Davies was given no chance with a curling shot into the top corner of the net. Manager Andy Leader made a triple substitution on 56 minutes bringing off Bowler, Czastka and Hornsley were replaced by Brett Williams, Mark Lilley and new signing from Eastleigh, Nathan Lynch. Although City had the majority of the attacking play in the rest of the match they made little headway against a resolute defence and in injury time could have gone two down when Allen conceded a penalty but Davies made a briliant save from the spot kick.

City : Clint Davies, James Wilson, Adam Lang, Sam Lockyer, Matt Czastka, Dave Allen, Scott Gillham, Luke Hornsley, Terry Cox, James Davis, Substitutes, Jimmy Ball, James O’Keeffe, Mark Lilley (56th), Brett Williams (56th) and Nathan Lynch (56th).
